Hofburgkapelle Company Information

General information

The Imperial Chapel was first mentioned in records in 1296. It is located in the “Schweizerhof”, the oldest part of the Imperial Palace. For several hundreds of years it was the most important place of religious worship of the Habsburg dynasty. Over the centuries the chapel was redecorated several times, however major parts of its medieval architecture and appearance have been preserved.
The Vienna Imperial Court Music Ensemble is one of the oldest musical institutions in Europe, its beginnings can be traced back to the High Middle Ages. In 1498 emperor Maximilian I. decreed the reorganization of the imperial musicians who were hereafter to perform regularly at the Viennese court (and especially the Imperial Court Chapel) – this was the time of birth of the Imperial Court Music Ensemble that exists until today. The Musicians of this Ensemble are today members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Boys‘ Choir, members of State Opera Men's Choir and the School of Gregorian Chant of the Imperial Chapel.
