Das Dom Museum Wien wird im Herbst 2017 nach mehrjährigem Umbau und in einer konzeptionellen Neuausrichtung unter der Leitung von Johanna Schwanberg wiedereröffnet.

Frei nach dem Motto „Tradition trifft Moderne“ werden in den vom international renommierten Architekten Boris Podrecca neu konzipierten Räumlichkeiten im historischen Palais am Stephansplatz die wertvollen Exponate mittelalterlicher Sakralkunst und die Schätze des Imperialen Wiens in einem spannenden und einzigartigen Zusammenspiel mit Schlüsselwerken der österreichischen Avantgarde und zeitgenössischen Positionen gezeigt.

Dom Museum Wien will reopen in fall 2017 with a major relaunch under its new director Johanna Schwanberg in a brand new space designed by renowned architect Boris Podrecca. The museum is situated in the heart of Vienna adjacent to St. Stephen’s Cathedral and houses some of the most valuable sacred and historic artefacts in the world.

The objects contained in this treasury date back to the Middle Ages, from the period of Hapsburg Archduke Rudolph IV (1339 – 1365), the founder of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the University of Vienna, and the man who established Vienna as the center of the Imperial Hapsburg Empire. The painting of his likeness, largely considered to be the oldest portrait of the western world, is a collection highlight.

Dom Museum Wien also houses a large collection of modern and contemporary pieces: It includes works by Expressionists and Secessionists as well as works by eminent members of the Austrian avant-garde. The collection is continuously expanded to include contemporary works.
