Sajóvelezd - eredetileg két községből állt - elnevezése a - d kicsinyítő képzővel ellátott Veres személynévből ered.
Az elnevezés az itt birtokos, a középkori okiratokban Kuer de Weres, Werez, Werezd néven említett család a nevéből származtatható. Elsőként Alsó- és Felső-Velezdként, a 1784 után Velezd-ként kerül a falu említésre. A Sajó előtag a földrajzi elhelyezkedést jelölve a későbbiekben került a település hivatalos elnevezésébe.
